Your Gifts At Work

Below are just a few examples of how your donations have made a difference.
As
the Volunteer Coordinator for Northside General and Harbour View Hospitals and Recreation Coordinator for Taigh Solas, I am a huge supporter of the important work of the Northside Hospital Foundation. TheFoundation allows me to bring smiles to the faces of patients and clients. The Taigh Solas Resident and Family Council work very closely with the Foundation. Memorial Donations sent to the Foundation for Taigh Solas are given back to Council and residents are able to enjoy theme events like our annual Mother’s Day A & K Chicken Supper or our
annual Father’s Day Lobster Boil.
I am so amazed at the partnership between the Northside Community and our Foundation. Friends helping friends... A Great Cape Breton Tradition!!!
Our Residents are able to get out into the community due to the fact that we are fortunate enough to have transportation: Trips to Feed the Ducks, Out to Bowl against other Nursing Homes, to the Empire Theaters to watch a movie, Ski Ben Eoin in the winter to watch the skiers, Trips to see their past friends who reside in other Nursing Homes and Restaurant Visits. At times, we even take a resident to the dentist or for an eye appointment in the Northside Harbourview bus purchased by the Northside Hospital Foundation.
The story that touches my heart the most happened three years ago when I received a phone call from a heart broken daughter who said that I and the Northside Harbourview bus was her last hope.
She explained that her dad was terminally ill and didn’t have much time left. He had one wish.......to see the Wind Turbines in Lingan close to where he grew up as a child. So I volunteered my Saturday, picked up 15 of his family members .......and we granted his wish.
After we
saw the Turbines, I pulled over in the Colliery Lands Park in
New Waterford and the family had a picnic together. What a
difference we made in that family’s life! The Northside
Hospital Foundation helped that family, a family like mine or
yours and that makes me take great pride in my work!

As
health care workers we sometimes take our
hospital and its departments for granted. When
circumstances change, and we find ourselves on the receiving end of these services, we realize how fortunate we are to have each and every one. On May 15 2010, ten hours after my daughter arrived home from Alberta and on the first day of my vacation, I broke both bones in my lower leg, and then fell down the basement stairs. My adventure led me through my first ambulance trip, a visit to OPD and x-ray at Northside General Hospital. A few days later- lab, ortho clinic, day surgery, surgery, recovery and 3a at CBRH. I cannot say enough about the care I received. From the girls
in day surgery and the OR who dealt with my odd allergies, the
lab person, who stayed after her time to take my blood and save
me a trip back from Northside and the staff from 3A who were
amazing, and the lady who cleaned my room and brightened my
spirits more than she will ever know.
As I sit here- cast still on, I have not yet figured out the lesson I am suppose to learn from this accident but I can, with great conviction say I have a new found respect and admiration for my colleagues and I realize what a huge impact the smallest gesture can make in a persons day. I support the Northside Hospital Foundation because they support us!
